The Impact of Leadership is Bigger Than You Think

At a recent conference where I was facilitating a session, a group of participants asked me a simple question:

"Why is learning about communication so important today?"

It's a great question.

My answer was that communication is not just about getting a message across. It's about the impact we have on the people around us.

Most leaders underestimate that impact.

A conversation that takes 30 seconds can build confidence—or destroy it.

A simple acknowledgement can make someone feel valued. A lack of recognition can make them question whether their contribution matters at all.

The reality is that leaders influence far more than performance. They influence how people feel about coming to work each day. They shape whether people feel seen, feel valued, and feel like they belong.

And when people feel those things, something remarkable happens. They become more engaged. More committed. More willing to contribute their ideas and energy. They care about the work they do because they feel connected to the people and purpose around them.

This is why I am passionate about helping leaders grow.

Not because leaders need to have all the answers, but because they need to understand the impact they have.

The good news is that leadership can be learned.

In fact, some of the most effective leaders are those who are willing to unlearn habits and behaviours that are no longer serving their team. They are curious enough to ask, "How am I showing up?" and courageous enough to make changes when needed.

I recently heard an interview where the Former CEO of WD-40 Garry Ridge, took himself back to University to learn how to lead better. I absolutely love hearing things like that!

The future starts with leaders who understand that every interaction matters.
