In fact, I’m not sure one size fits all in any situation!
In a workshop last week, a young leader posed an interesting question to her colleague:
“I wonder how your team would go if I was their leader?”
These two leaders have completely different communication styles. The conversation led them to consider how their teams might respond to each of them.
One recognised that her confident, direct and demanding style might be quite intimidating for some team members. The other realised that leading a team made up of people who were her polar opposite could also be a little frustrating!
It got me thinking…
Do you suit the team you lead – or does your team need something different from you to reach high performance?
As leaders, it’s easy to lead in the way that feels most natural to us. But great leadership isn’t about expecting everyone else to adapt to our style. It’s about understanding our people, recognising what they need, and being willing to flex our approach to get the best out of them.
Because sometimes, the leadership style that works brilliantly for one person can have the opposite effect on another.
So, here’s a question to ponder: Are you leading your team the way YOU like to be led, or the way THEY need to be led?
