Leadership Development Isn't a One-and-Done Deal.
One of the things that has really struck me in 2026 is the enormous amount of thought, energy and investment organisations put into growing new and emerging leaders.
And that’s fantastic.
But I’ve been wondering…
What happens next?
Because the skills you need as a new leader aren’t necessarily the skills you need when you’re leading leaders, and they certainly aren’t the same skills you need when you’re sitting at the senior leadership table.
Leadership changes as you move through the levels.
A new leader might need to build confidence, communicate clearly, delegate, and learn how to lead a team.
A leader of leaders needs to think differently — developing others, influencing across teams, creating accountability and stepping out of the detail.
A senior leader may need to navigate complexity, lead through change, build culture, make difficult decisions, and think strategically while still having a significant impact on people.
So perhaps the question isn’t:
“Have we invested in leadership development?”
It’s:
“Are we continuing to develop our leaders as their leadership evolves?”
And there may be an interesting gap between knowing we need to develop our skills and actually committing to the ongoing practice of professional development.
Because leadership isn’t something you learn once, tick off and move on from.
The best leaders keep learning.
They keep reflecting.
They keep practising.
And they keep adapting.
It’s not a one-and-done deal.
So, wherever you are on your leadership journey, perhaps the question to ask yourself is:
What does the next level of my leadership require from me?
