Do You Talk to the Person Next to You on the Plane?

Most of us don’t. We board, settle in, put on headphones, and disappear into our screens, or our books, and secretly hope that the person squeezed in next to us does the same.

However, last week, when I was flying from Wellington to Auckland, in what felt like an over-packed plane, my seatmate started to engage me in conversation from the minute I sat down. Not uncomfortably, just easily starting to chat and this ease continued for the whole flight. I enjoyed every minute of it learning about his business, his passion for working and the holiday he was about to take with his wife (seated behind us).

When we landed, I realised that this very charming 79-year-old Businessman / Bee-Keeper from Wanganui, had a skill that we are rapidly losing – the art of simple conversation. 💬

These conversations push us to listen better, ask questions, find common interests, and really be in the moment. These are the same skills that drive leadership, collaboration, and meaningful work relationships.

So next time you fly, instead of hunkering down, give it a go! Say hello. Ask a question. Stay curious. 👉You might land with a feeling of contentment from the opportunity of having made a real connection.☺️
